WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Winston-Salem community is mourning the loss of Thomas James Smith III, 49, who died following a serious two-vehicle crash on US-52 Northbound near Patterson Avenue.

According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, officers responded to reports of a collision involving a 2021 Dodge and a 2012 Honda in the northbound lanes of US-52. Preliminary findings indicate that Smith was operating the Dodge when the vehicle left the roadway for reasons that remain under investigation.

Authorities stated that the Dodge struck a safety barrier before re-entering traffic and colliding with the Honda. The impact prompted an immediate emergency response as police, firefighters, and medical personnel rushed to the scene.

First responders found Smith unconscious inside his vehicle and quickly transported him to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Honda, a 59-year-old woman, was not injured in the crash.
