MEDFORD, Ore. — The Medford community is mourning the loss of Nicole Dominguez, 43, who died following a violent assault Tuesday afternoon near the railroad tracks at the end of Welch Street, according to local authorities.
The incident has left family members, friends, and residents shocked as investigators continue working to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal attack.
According to the Medford Police Department, officers responded to reports of a disturbance after nearby residents heard what was described as a violent altercation in the area. When officers arrived, they discovered Dominguez suffering from severe traumatic head injuries.
Emergency responders immediately provided medical assistance; however, the injuries proved fatal. Dominguez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police quickly launched an investigation and began gathering evidence while securing the area. Detectives interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance footage from nearby businesses in an effort to identify the person responsible.
Authorities later identified the suspect as Darius McCree-Santangelo, 19, who was located approximately 20 minutes after the initial emergency call near the intersection of West McAndrews Road and Summit Avenue.
Police reported that the suspect was taken into custody without incident and subsequently booked into the Jackson County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder.
Investigators believe the victim and suspect were acquainted, although officials have not publicly disclosed the nature of their relationship. Authorities stated that surveillance footage played a significant role in helping investigators identify and locate the suspect shortly after the assault occurred.
The Jackson County District Attorney’s Office is overseeing the case as the investigation moves forward through the judicial process.
As news of Dominguez’s death spread throughout Medford, an outpouring of grief and condolences emerged from community members and those who knew her personally.
Friends and loved ones describe Nicole as a woman whose presence touched the lives of many around her. Beyond the tragic circumstances of her death, they remember her as a daughter, friend, and valued member of the community whose life mattered deeply to those closest to her.
