PRYOR, Okla. — A heartbreaking accident in Pryor on Tuesday evening has left a community grieving after a 1-year-old child died after being struck by a vehicle in a private driveway, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Authorities said the incident occurred at approximately 8:41 p.m. near Highway 69 and West 520 Road. Preliminary information from investigators indicates that a driver was attempting to back out of a private driveway in order to turn around and leave the property when the vehicle struck the child.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies rushed to the scene following reports of the accident. Assisting agencies included the Pryor Creek Police Department, Pryor Creek Fire Department, MESTA, the Mayes County Sheriff’s Office, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, GRDA Police, and the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service.
Despite immediate efforts to save the child’s life, the injuries proved fatal.
Pryor Creek Police Chief Jeremy Cantrell said officers initially encountered a vehicle transporting the child to the hospital and immediately began rendering aid alongside other emergency responders.
“Despite the coordinated efforts of law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and hospital staff, the child was later pronounced deceased,” officials said.
The tragic loss has deeply affected family members, first responders, and the wider Pryor community. The death of a young child under such circumstances has prompted an outpouring of sympathy and support from residents as they struggle to process the devastating news.
