WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Winston-Salem community is mourning the loss of Thomas James Smith III, 49, who died following a serious two-vehicle crash on US-52 Northbound near Patterson Avenue.
According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, officers responded to reports of a collision involving a 2021 Dodge and a 2012 Honda in the northbound lanes of US-52. Preliminary findings indicate that Smith was operating the Dodge when the vehicle left the roadway for reasons that remain under investigation.
Authorities stated that the Dodge struck a safety barrier before re-entering traffic and colliding with the Honda. The impact prompted an immediate emergency response as police, firefighters, and medical personnel rushed to the scene.
First responders found Smith unconscious inside his vehicle and quickly transported him to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he later succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the Honda, a 59-year-old woman, was not injured in the crash.
Investigators have not confirmed whether speed, impairment, a medical emergency, or other factors contributed to the collision. The Winston-Salem Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
News of Smith’s passing has left family members, friends, and community members grieving a sudden and devastating loss. Those who knew him describe him as a man whose life touched many people through personal relationships, friendships, and community connections.
For loved ones, the tragedy is especially difficult because of its unexpected nature. Fatal traffic accidents often leave families facing unanswered questions while coping with the emotional impact of losing someone they care about deeply.
Friends and relatives have begun sharing memories and messages of condolence, remembering Smith not for the crash that claimed his life, but for the person he was. Many have reflected on the importance of the moments they shared with him and the lasting impact he had on those around him.
As the investigation continues, the focus for many remains on honoring Smith’s memory and supporting his family during a period of profound grief.
Traffic fatalities serve as a sobering reminder of how quickly lives can change. A routine trip can become a life-altering event in a matter of seconds, affecting not only those directly involved but entire families and communities.
The Winston-Salem community continues to offer prayers, condolences, and support to Smith’s loved ones as they navigate the difficult days ahead.
