Buffalo, N.Y. – June 2, 2026 — Authorities in western New York are investigating a deadly series of shootings spanning Buffalo and Cheektowaga that left four people dead and led to the arrest of a 28-year-old man now charged with second-degree murder.
Police identified the suspect as Saleh Mohamed, a Cheektowaga resident who was taken into custody Monday evening. While he currently faces one homicide charge in Buffalo, investigators are also examining his possible connection to a triple homicide discovered at a residence he owns in Cheektowaga.
Officials say both investigations remain active and ongoing.
Grant Street Shooting
Buffalo Police responded shortly after 2:30 p.m. Monday to reports of gunfire in the 1000 block of Grant Street, a busy commercial corridor on the city’s West Side.
Officers arrived within minutes and found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest outside a laundromat. Despite life-saving efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:48 p.m.
Witnesses reported hearing two gunshots and seeing a man fleeing eastbound on foot. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses helped investigators identify Mohamed as a suspect.
Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity, pending family notification.
Arrest of Suspect
Mohamed was arrested without incident at approximately 6:15 p.m. at a relative’s home in Cheektowaga. He was transported to the Erie County Holding Center and is expected to be arraigned in Buffalo City Court.
He has been charged with Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A-I felony under New York law, carrying a potential sentence of 15 years to life.
Investigators have not publicly confirmed a motive, though they believe the victim may have known the suspect.
Cheektowaga Triple Homicide Investigation
Separately, Cheektowaga police discovered three deceased individuals during a welfare check at a home on Harlem Road around 4:15 p.m. Monday.
The victims include two adults and a 16-year-old girl. All three were found with gunshot wounds. Their identities have not yet been officially released.
Property records show the residence is owned by Mohamed. Investigators are working to determine the relationship between the suspect and the victims, as well as the timeline of the killings.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the Buffalo shooting and the Cheektowaga deaths are directly connected, but they are coordinating closely across jurisdictions.
Investigation Continues
Erie County medical examiners have completed preliminary autopsies on all four victims. Officials say all deaths were caused by gunshot wounds, with ballistic testing ongoing to determine whether the same weapon was used in both cases.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence from both scenes.
Community Impact
The violence has deeply shaken both Buffalo’s West Side and Cheektowaga residents.
On Grant Street, a small memorial of candles and flowers has formed near the shooting site. In Cheektowaga, neighbors described the Harlem Road home as quiet and private, with limited interaction between residents.
School officials confirmed that a 16-year-old student from Cheektowaga High School is among the deceased and said counseling services are being made available.
Legal Status
Mohamed remains in custody and has not entered a plea. Prosecutors say additional charges may be filed depending on the outcome of the Cheektowaga investigation.
Under New York law, he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Ongoing Questions
Authorities continue working to determine:
- The identity of the Buffalo shooting victim
- The relationship between Mohamed and all victims
- The timeline linking both crime scenes
- A possible motive for the attacks
Investigators are urging anyone with information to contact Buffalo Police or Cheektowaga Police, or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers WNY.
As both communities grapple with shock and grief, officials say the investigation will likely continue for weeks as forensic evidence is analyzed and witness accounts are verified.
For now, four families are left mourning, and two communities are searching for answers.
