GRAYVILLE, Ill. — Authorities have identified the man found deceased inside a parked SUV at the Road Ranger Truck Stop in Grayville as Mark Willoughby of Evansville, Indiana.
According to investigators, the discovery was made after a concerned customer noticed that the vehicle had remained parked in the same location for an extended period, reportedly for more than a week. The customer alerted truck stop staff, who then contacted law enforcement to request a welfare check.
Officers from the Grayville City Police Department and the White County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene on Thursday afternoon. Upon arrival, authorities secured the area and established a perimeter while investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the death.
White County Coroner Chris Marsh confirmed that Willoughby was found deceased inside the SUV. Based on preliminary findings, officials have indicated that the death is being investigated as a suicide. However, authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that final determinations regarding the cause and manner of death will be made following additional examination and review.
As part of the investigation, an Illinois State Police crime scene investigator was requested to assist local agencies in processing and documenting the scene. Officials stated that the specialized assistance is standard procedure in cases involving unattended deaths and will help ensure a thorough review of all available evidence.
Willoughby’s body has been transported for further examination. Additional testing and investigative findings will assist the coroner’s office in confirming the final cause and manner of death.
Law enforcement agencies continue to review the timeline leading up to the discovery and are asking anyone who may have observed unusual activity near the Road Ranger Truck Stop during the past several days to contact authorities.
No additional details have been released at this time as the investigation remains active.
Authorities have expressed their condolences to Willoughby’s family and loved ones as they navigate this difficult time.
