MUSCATINE, IOWA — Authorities are investigating one of the most devastating domestic violence incidents in recent Iowa history after seven people were found dead across multiple locations in Muscatine on June 1, 2026.
According to the Muscatine Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland fatally shot six family members before taking his own life on the Riverfront Trail. Officials described the incident as a multi-scene homicide that unfolded over several hours Monday afternoon.
Sequence of Events
Police say the first emergency call came shortly after noon from a residence on Park Avenue, where officers discovered four victims deceased from gunshot wounds. Among the victims were McFarland’s wife, Lesa McFarland, two minor children, and an elderly female relative.
As the investigation expanded, authorities located additional victims at separate locations: one at a residence on Mill Street and another at a business on Grand Avenue. The victims were identified as McFarland’s two brothers.
Later that afternoon, McFarland was found deceased on the Riverfront Trail near the Mississippi River after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A firearm believed to have been used in the killings was recovered at the scene.
Investigation
Officials believe the killings were connected to a domestic dispute. Authorities reported that McFarland had a prior criminal history, including a domestic assault conviction in 2015 and a previous protective order filed by his wife in 2025, later dismissed.
Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the full circumstances leading up to the incident, including the timeline of events and potential warning signs.
Community Impact
The tragedy has deeply affected the Muscatine Community School District, where both employees and students were among the victims. Counseling services have been made available across several schools as the community begins to process the loss.
Local and state officials have expressed condolences and emphasized the need for continued efforts to address domestic violence and mental health crises.
A public vigil is planned to honor the victims.
Ongoing Investigation
The Muscatine Police Department Major Crimes Unit and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation continue to lead the case. Officials are asking anyone with information to come forward as they work to establish a complete understanding of the events.
As the community mourns, residents are gathering in remembrance of the victims and supporting affected families during this time of profound grief.
Authorities say the investigation remains active and ongoing.
