TAHLEQUAH / PARK HILL, Okla. — The communities of Tahlequah, Park Hill, and surrounding areas across Oklahoma are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Camden Matthew Soldier, affectionately known as “Cam,” who passed away on May 28, 2026, at the age of 17.

Born on January 26, 2009, Cam is being remembered by family, friends, teachers, and peers as a vibrant, energetic, and compassionate young man whose presence brought joy and warmth to everyone around him. His passing has left an immeasurable void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.

A Life Full of Energy, Curiosity, and Love

Camden entered the world as the youngest of five children and quickly became known for his lively spirit and adventurous nature. From an early age, he displayed a strong love for the outdoors, especially spending time near water, traveling, and creating memories with family and friends.

Those closest to him describe his childhood as full of exploration and laughter. He formed meaningful friendships during his time at Chouteau Elementary School, where he developed a lasting bond with educators who played an important role in his early development. Among them was Mrs. Shelle Messer, whose guidance and encouragement left a lasting impression on Cam throughout his life.

He often spoke of her influence with affection, recalling her lessons in a playful yet respectful manner—reflecting both his humor and appreciation for those who shaped his journey.

Education, Growth, and Future Aspirations

After eighth grade, Cam relocated to Tahlequah with his mother, April Dreadfulwater, and stepfather, Cody Sparks. He later began attending Keys High School, where he quickly adjusted to a new environment, built friendships, and formed strong connections with both classmates and teachers.

During this time, Cam met close friend Nehemiah Begay, whom many describe as a brother-like figure in his life. Their bond was built on shared experiences, mutual support, and companionship through life’s transitions.

Cam also developed a deep love for music and travel during his teenage years. Friends recall road trips filled with laughter, conversation, and music, particularly those shared with his close friend Abby Goad, which became treasured memories for those who knew him.

As he matured, Cam demonstrated independence and ambition. With support from Bill and Wendi Worthington, he purchased his first truck—an accomplishment he took great pride in and one that symbolized his growing independence.

He later made the decision to pursue his GED and enrolled at Oklahoma Technical College (OTC), where he trained as an HVAC technician. Under the mentorship of instructors such as Mr. Jimmy, Cam’s enthusiasm for learning and dedication to his future stood out. He approached his studies with determination and optimism, proudly wearing his uniform and looking forward to building a career.

A Loving Son, Brother, and Friend

Camden Matthew Soldier was deeply cherished by his family. He is remembered as a devoted son, caring brother, and loving presence within his household. His personality was described as quirky, charismatic, and full of heart.

He shared a particularly close relationship with his family, including his mother, April Dreadfulwater, stepfather, Cody Sparks, father Matthew Soldier, and siblings Lauran, Trent, Andrew, and Matthew II. He also maintained strong bonds with extended family members, including a wide circle of uncles, aunts, grandparents, and relatives.

Friends recall his infectious smile, humor, and ability to lift the mood of any room he entered. His love for his mother’s fry bread and his appreciation for family traditions reflected his deep connection to home and heritage.

Funeral and Memorial Services

A funeral service for Camden Matthew Soldier is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2026, at Chouteau First Baptist Church, with Pastor Brian Soldier officiating. A wake will be held the evening prior at Shipman’s Funeral Home in Pryor, allowing family and friends to gather in remembrance.

The family has invited those wishing to pay their respects to share condolences and memories through Shipman’s Funeral Home.
