WILDWOOD, New Jersey — A large-scale search operation is ongoing after 14-year-old Davoris Carter, a student at Delta School, went missing in the waters off Wildwood during a school trip. The incident has deeply shaken his school community, family, and local authorities as rescue teams continue efforts to locate the teen.
The situation unfolded near Morey’s Pier, a popular beachfront area where students were reportedly participating in a supervised outing when the incident occurred.
According to early reports, Davoris Carter was on a class trip with Delta School, a program serving students with special needs in Northeast Philadelphia. The trip included both school staff and a family member providing supervision.
Family members stated that while a guardian briefly stepped away to get food, Davoris entered the water with other students. Staff members were reportedly observing from the shoreline at the time. Conditions in the water quickly became dangerous, leading to multiple students requiring rescue assistance.
Emergency services in Wildwood responded rapidly after distress calls were made. A local officer was among the first on scene and assisted in rescuing three other students who had entered the water and were struggling. Those students were safely brought back to shore and treated by emergency personnel. However, Davoris Carter was not immediately located.
Search efforts began quickly and have continued over multiple days, with teams from local law enforcement, marine rescue units, and other emergency agencies participating in the operation.
Authorities have stated that conditions at the time included typical weekday staffing levels, and no lifeguards were present on duty, which is common outside peak beach hours.
Delta School released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident. CEO Dr. David Weathington described the situation as “a devastating tragedy” and said the school community is heartbroken. The statement also emphasized ongoing support for students and staff as they process the emotional impact of the event, with counseling services made available to those affected.
School officials expressed hope for a successful rescue while acknowledging the seriousness of the situation.
Search operations are continuing along the shoreline and surrounding waters near Morey’s Pier, with teams using boats, divers, and shoreline patrols to cover a wide area. Authorities have indicated that efforts will continue daily, with strategies adjusted based on weather, tide conditions, and visibility.
Rescue teams are focusing on both nearshore and deeper water zones while monitoring currents that may have affected movement in the area. Despite extensive efforts, Davoris Carter has not yet been located.
